Sometimes it appears there isn’t much difference between a bribe and appreciation. Yes, we can say that the timing and the process involved in either are significant — a bribe is demanded, and is usually paid upfront to some official or gatekeeper while the appreciation is unsolicited (or only requested indirectly) and comes after the contractor’s job is done. So bribe is bad, appreciation is good. OK.
But I must say the appreciation seems like a demand but now from the guy doling it out. It feels like the receiver must now become committed or loyal to the guy or organisation in future dealings if he has any sense of respectability. How best can one manage this then both from the payer and the receiver’s side?
